The Commercial is an independent contemporary art gallery in Sydney, Australia. It opened in 2012 and represents a diverse group of early and mid-career artists as well as the Gunter Christmann Estate (with Niagara Galleries) and the Michael Riley Estate (in association with the Michael Riley Foundation).
Owner/Director, Amanda Rowell, was gallery manager at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney from 2001- 2012, Senior Research Assistant at Thirty Victoria Street (Director Frank McDonald) in Sydney and Lucca, Italy, working with Old Master European painting and sculpture as well as fund-raising projects from 1998-2001 and was a gallery assistant at Eva Breuer Art Dealer working with Australian Modernist painters from 1997-1998. She studied Art History and Theory at the University of Sydney. Parallel to her work in commercial galleries, Rowell has been active as a freelance curator and writer working predominantly with emerging artists.
The Commercial is located in the emerging cultural quarter of Redfern/Chippendale near the intersection of Abercrombie and Cleveland Streets. It is a five minute walk from Redfern Station and fifteen minutes from Central.
The Commercial is a registered participant in the Art Money scheme. Art Money was launched in April 2015. It provides interest free loans for buying art at participating galleries. Loans are available for artworks priced from $750 to $20,000. Art Money is delivered by 10 Group and supported by the City of Sydney as part of their Cultural Policy Action Plan.
